You are the owner of a wooden house. In front of you on the site is a new wooden house. It is assembled, and now the question is to preserve its appearance and integrity for many decades. Wood is a durable, but at the same time capricious building material, the capriciousness of which is that it is necessary to properly comply with all the requirements of the technology of its processing and preparation for further use.
Only when the entire algorithm of the technology is observed, does a truly warm, eye-pleasing product turn out, and not a series of problems that accompany its use.
And the basis for this when building a house is preparation for final work, i.e., painting. This article is devoted to this.
Preparation for painting consists of several parts, which we will consider below. Compliance with the algorithm proposed in this article will help you minimize the time and cost of painting, and will also help save you from incorrect actions that can lead to the birth, during the operation of the house, of unnecessary "headaches".
Wood for further painting should have a moisture content of no more than 20%, well a maximum of 22%. If this parameter is higher, do not start painting and wait until the wood gives off moisture to the environment.
The ideal seasons for painting the facade of a wooden house are spring and autumn, while those periods when the average daily temperature is kept within +15°C. That is, when the temperature during the day does not exceed +25...+30°C, and at night does not drop below +5°C. Because the recommended temperature for painting with all paintwork materials is from +5 to +30°C. Keep this in mind. Do not paint both during freezing periods and during summer heat periods, when the temperature in the sun reaches 30-40°C and higher.
The choice of material is a very important point. I will only note that the period of painting depends on the choice of material: for different materials, on different solvents, there are different requirements for drying time, sanding, processing, and different costs. Water-based materials are usually more expensive than solvent-based materials. As they say, measure seven times, cut once. The algorithm is simple: decide on the paintwork material, read its detailed description, and only then proceed to calculating the consumption for your house and the amount required for painting.
Approach the issue with maximum responsibility. Calculate the area for painting according to the principle: the area of all walls minus the area of windows. Comparing this with the consumption of PM recommended by the manufacturer, you will get the estimated volume of paint, oil or glaze. Approach the purchase according to the principle: the total consumption is 20 liters - take them, if there is not enough, recalculate how much to buy and buy more. Do not take with a margin, you run the risk of overpaying for the material, and then not knowing what to do with it. This issue can be resolved by returning it to the store if it is sold commercially in this color. If it was specially tinted for you, it is unlikely to be accepted and refunded.
Before painting, do not save on fire protection products. A short circuit, a burning fireplace inside a wooden house, an electric stove for cooking - their temperatures are many times higher than the ignition temperature of wood at 200-300°C. And be sure to consider the compatibility of the fire retardant with the painting material. Always ask the seller about compatibility before purchasing.
Proper sanding is the key to the durability of the wooden facade coating. A coating without high-quality sanding before painting can reduce the service life of the paint coating to a year or two, or even less.
Quality protection of wood outside consists of its protection against fungus and mold. And since the paint coating consists of an antiseptic, the deeper it penetrates into the wood, the more it will be, respectively, there will be more product that prevents the reproduction of fungus. Deep penetration is achieved by rougher sanding. The most ideal option would be sanding with P40-P80 grit sandpaper.
The reproduction of fungus and mold occurs by transferring spores from one place to another. Our surrounding air is filled with these spores. Once on unprotected wood, the spores stick to it. If humidity and temperature are not suitable for reproduction, the spores "sleep". Favorable conditions for reproduction include high (above 20%) wood moisture and ambient temperature of 5-10°C.
To remove such negative processes, it is necessary to wash the wood immediately before painting, one day in advance. And then proceed to painting.
It happens that there is not enough time to paint before the cold weather sets in (late autumn), but it is not recommended to leave the tree unprotected. Here, agents for temporary protection of wood come to the rescue - impregnations with antiseptics. They can be washable (used under a canopy) and non-washable (for open surfaces).
Their service life is different, but they allow you to solve the issue of what to do if it is no longer possible to paint. Sometimes it is better to postpone painting than to paint without observing technological standards.
As you probably already understood, the seemingly simple issue of painting a wooden house is a very precise technological process that has many subtleties. On our website you will find all the materials for this, and by phone numbers or in our store, our specialists will help you with the choice of materials and advise you on all issues.
